Personal Development

At Fiddlers Lane Primary School, we are proud to nurture the whole child. We are committed to developing pupils who are socially aware, confident in who they are, accepting of others and ambitious in their learning. Personal Development is not an additional element of school life; it is integral to everything we do — woven through every interaction, every lesson, every assembly and every shared experience.

Our curriculum is driven by five core drivers: Confident Communicators, Aspirational learners, Active Citizens, Resilient individuals and Healthy Advocates. These drivers shape our approach to teaching, learning and personal growth, ensuring that all children are equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to thrive both now and in the future.

Our primary purpose is to prepare children for the wider world, enabling them to develop a strong sense of purpose and belonging. We want every child to feel confident to express their views, listen to others and make a positive contribution. Through rich opportunities for discussion, debate and collaboration, pupils at Fiddlers Lane grow as Confident Communicators, able to articulate their thoughts with clarity, respect and confidence.

We are committed to delivering a purposeful and empowering curriculum that prepares learners for the next steps in their education and life beyond school. We want our children to be Aspirational — to believe in their own potential, to set high expectations of themselves and to recognise that they are capable of achieving great things. By broadening horizons and helping pupils understand the world in which they live, our curriculum inspires ambition and curiosity.

Fiddlers Lane pupils are encouraged to see themselves as Active Citizens, developing an age-appropriate understanding of their role in society and how they can contribute positively to their communities. Our Personal Development provision ensures that children gain the knowledge and understanding required to make informed choices, show respect and tolerance, and act responsibly both in school and in the wider world.

In an increasingly complex society, where children grow up navigating both online and offline lives, we recognise the importance of teaching pupils how to stay safe, healthy and supported. Our curriculum develops key life skills such as resilience, self-esteem, risk management, teamwork and critical thinking. We aim to nurture resilient learners who can manage challenges, learn from setbacks and persevere with confidence and determination.

Supporting physical and mental wellbeing is a vital part of our Personal Development offer. As Healthy Advocates, our pupils learn how to care for themselves and others, understanding the importance of positive relationships, emotional wellbeing, physical health and personal safety. Through well-planned learning and meaningful experiences, pupils develop lifelong habits that promote a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

Personal Development at Fiddlers Lane is underpinned by a comprehensive PSHE curriculum, structured around six core themes:

  • Families and Relationships
  • Physical health and mental wellbeing
  • Safety and the changing body
  • Citizenship
  • Economic wellbeing
  • Transition

We value the voice of our pupils and embrace their talents and interests. A wide range of extra-curricular opportunities enriches school life and is shaped through pupil voice, including regular school council meetings. These experiences support children in developing leadership, confidence and a sense of ownership over their learning journey.

Ultimately, we want our pupils to leave Fiddlers Lane Primary School feeling empowered — equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitude to manage life’s challenges and seize its opportunities. Through a strong commitment to Personal Development, we ensure that every child is supported to thrive, mature and grow into a well-informed, confident and compassionate young person, ready to play an active role in an ever-changing world.
