History Curriculum
Our history curriculum is designed to spark curiosity and inspire children to discover how the past has shaped the world they live in today. Through carefully sequenced units, pupils develop a secure understanding of chronology, exploring significant people, events and periods from British and world history. Each year builds on previous learning so that children can deepen their knowledge, make meaningful connections, and develop a strong sense of historical time.
We place a strong emphasis on historical enquiry. Children are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, investigate a range of sources, and consider different viewpoints. This helps them to think like historians—evaluating evidence, forming judgments, and communicating their ideas clearly. From examining artefacts and photographs to interpreting written accounts, pupils learn how history is constructed and why interpretations of the past may differ.
Throughout the curriculum, rich vocabulary is introduced and revisited to support children in understanding key concepts such as empire, civilisation, democracy, and monarchy. Lessons are engaging and immersive, often involving hands-on experiences, themed days, and cross-curricular links that bring learning to life. By the time pupils leave our school, they have developed a broad and balanced understanding of the past and the confidence to talk about history with accuracy and enthusiasm.
