Art Curriculum

At Fiddlers Lane Community Primary School, we recognise that Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children of all abilities to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.

At our school, Art and Design is a valued part of the curriculum, giving children the chance to explore their creativity, develop new skills, and express themselves with confidence. Through a carefully sequenced programme of lessons, pupils are introduced to a wide range of artistic techniques, materials, and processes. They learn how to draw, paint, sculpt, and work with mixed media while discovering how artists throughout history have communicated ideas and emotions through their work.

Our curriculum is designed to build skills progressively, allowing children to revisit key techniques and deepen their understanding as they move through the school. Each unit encourages hands‑on experimentation and problem‑solving, helping pupils to think like real artists and designers. They are taught to evaluate their own creations, celebrate their achievements, and consider ways to refine and improve their work.

Children also explore the work of diverse artists, craftspeople, and designers from different cultures and time periods. This helps them appreciate a wide range of artistic styles and understand how art connects to the world around them. By responding to these examples, pupils develop their own artistic voice and learn to reflect thoughtfully on the work of others.

Ultimately, our aim is to nurture confidence, imagination, and a lifelong appreciation of art. Whether working independently or collaboratively, every child is encouraged to take creative risks, enjoy the process of making, and feel proud of what they produce.
